Taps...a moment of silence
We'll never forget. All gave some. Some gave all.
For those of you interested Only in TRAVEL, I (Jack) wrote the blog between MARCH 2010 and October 2010 during our travels west. We saw the most beautiful places and had the best time in our big truck and little trailer. See Blog Archive below.

Hilton Head/Lunch With Friends
Unfortunately, when Nancy pulled her camera out of the case she changed the settings so the first pictures of the girls didn't come out well--they were too dark and grainy. That's one bad thing about the camera--the settings are too easily moved accidentally. Not to worry, though, Nancy took a picture of a picture so you can see how pretty they are!
Duffy, Susie, Maeve and Ava |
Aren't they beautiful. That's Maeve standing and Ava sitting in the chair. |
This is Susie (not my Susie), but she was very nice to me. Isn't she pretty? |
My Susie |
Duffy |
The great restaurant that let me eat with them. |
Maeve was petting me almost all during lunch. :) |
Okay, okay, no more pictures of me and my new squeeze. |
This one was noisy. |
This one was mumbling. |
Then we went to eat at Cracker Barrel. Not quite up to Susie's standard, but Nancy likes it. Besides, Nancy never dresses fancy for anyone any more. Duffy took a picture and it looked like she got her shirt from a dumpster. (don't tell her I said that)

Savannah
We arrived in Savannah, yesterday. Taking down was a bit of a problem because of the angle we were on, but we managed to get it done. When we arrived here, at Savannah Oaks, as Nancy was unhitching, the thingy that holds the bar in place snapped back suddenly and whacked her on the back of her left hand (fortunately, she's right handed). It's all sorts of beautiful colors and swollen, but nothing broken. Susie and I just have to put up with, "ouch, ooh, ack, eee, groan" whenever she moves. The nerve problem continues from the antibiotic she took a while back--we don't know if it's permanent or not, but she has realized how much she uses her thumbs, and I have discovered how to make her say, "Ouch!"
Yesterday afternoon, Susie went into Savannah while we stayed back and rested and Nancy took a much needed shower (trust me, it was needed--she was soaked at James Island, dried off in the car, and then was soaked after hitching up here. (did I mention with sweat?)
Today, we took a ride to St. Simon's Island.
She did take a picture of me when we were walking. Susie, too.
On our walk, Nancy said, "Oh, look, wild life!" Susie was being a smart alec and saying she saw another lizard and a woodpecker (big deal) on her run this morning.
We couldn't be on St. Simon's without taking a picture of the light house. You'll see how Nancy solved the white problem! There was a big outdoor antique fair going on--Nancy once bought an old, old wooden ironing board from an antique show in the same place the last time they were together on the island.
Lighthouse History
We drove the 80 miles back to our campsite and will be going back out to go to Savannah for dinner. Hopefully, they will find another restaurant that lets me in. I behave so I see no reason for all the silly rules. Oh, before I forget, Nancy said that she has discovered that her little camera doesn't do well with the color white. Hmmm... See how she solved it in the lighthouse picture? She says, "There's more than one way to skin a cat!" (not a very nice thought)
Nothing more for tonight. Susie (the apple that fell far from the tree) wanted to eat at Johnny Harris, a famous BBQ place in Savannah. From there, we went into downtown Savannah. Nancy and I stayed in the truck in the parking deck while Susie went down to River Street. Not many shops were open so she was back, quickly. Everything is crowded down here--people everywhere.
There are tropical storm warnings up so we'll wait to see if we are evacuated. They close the main artery (316) going east and all lanes are used to go west (inland). That should be fun the way Nancy panics in crisis. :))

This is where Nancy and Rich stayed before they had Lizzie. Nancy has many fond and romantic memories of this lovely place. |
Just for Good Measure |
I can't believe it, Nancy forgot to take my picture!!! Well, I guess it was difficult holding my leash, trying to eat, and handling the camera so I won't gripe too much. |
Everyone stops to pet me and they all tell me how handsome I am. Well, I'm not bragging...I'm just saying'. |

Isn't it a pretty lighthouse? That's the lighthouse keeper's house. |

Last Day in Charleston-Tomorrow Savannah
We started the day off this morning with a drive over to Daniel Island. Just residential, not really worth the time, but it wasn't very far. I did see my first wild life! Buzzards. They were munching on a possum who had a collision with a car. They had dragged it over to the side of the road. I got out of the car to take a picture and a dozen of them flew out of the tree right above it--except for one who stood his ground until I got too close to him, too.
We returned to downtown Charleston. Susan shopped while Jack and I sat and people watched. When she came back, she said she had stopped in the Aveda Salon and a woman whose husband is a chef recommended a restaurant for dinner. Susan told her we couldn't go because we had a dog so she told her to go to Bowen's Island. It's a dive, but they have the best seafood and they allow dogs. It would be a good place to sit, have a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the water. That sounded great. The caveat is that we had to be there by 4:45 p.m. because they open at 5:00 p.m. and there would already be a line--it's that good! Perfect!
We went back to the trailer to relax for about an hour and then set off to Bowens Island. It is literally in the middle of the marsh. We turned off Folly Road and drove a narrow, desolate road for probably a mile or so, and that road turned into a dirt road. To our surprise there were several houses that just didn't seem to fit, but it was like a private compound.
The only thing we could think of is that maybe the owners and family lived in them. There were also some run down shanteys. We kept driving and arrived at the restaurant. As the lady told Susan, there were people already waiting to get in.
We decided to verify that they allowed dogs. They did not. Susan said it was very hot on the outside deck and there was no air conditioning inside (we wouldn't have been able to go, anyway because we have Jack). So, that was that. We stopped to grab a quick bite at The Kickin' Chicken. Then, we went back downtown. It was beautifully cool in the Battery where I sat while Susan took Jack for a very long walk. As beautiful as the city is in the day time, it's even more beautiful in the evening with all the lights. We got home after dark so getting ready to leave is left for morning. Ugh. I do believe that Susan has enough clothes, make up, etc. to stay out for 5 years. :) The apple fell far from the tree, for sure! I always tell her that as hard as she works to keep in shape, she might as well wear the clothes she wants while she can.
I just had to stop and take a picture of a church we passed. I couldn't get the whole thing, but what fascinated us was the covered walk--we could imagine brides walking down to the church. The lady in the salon told Susan that many people come to Charleston to get married--as many or more as Las Vegas. I find that hard to believe, but what do I know. Anyway, I couldn't get the shot I wanted because there was a gate. Here is what I could get. There was an old cemetery on the church grounds that I would have loved to have visited, but it was too dark. Never enough time for Charleston.
Off to Savannah, tomorrow! Just hope the weather holds and bugs stay wherever they are.

Oh, No, I Forgot My Favorite Little House!
Oh, No, I Forgot My Favorite Little House!
Finally, A Little Action!!
I didn't blog, yesterday, because Nancy's back was really giving her fits so she mostly sat and read. It was just as well because the air conditioner STOPPED--not good in the low country. Nancy went over to the office to get the name of a repair service and lucked out because another man had one coming to work on his. She asked if he would send them over when they were done with his. It had frozen up. Something got stuck in the filter on the part that is up on the roof and he took a piece of ice as big as a quart of milk out of it. Nancy always washes the filters inside after each trip, but he said she couldn't have done anything to stop this from happening. They used Susie's hair dryer to melt the ice and it was fine after that. The man said if it ever happens again that we should run the fan only to melt it, but that these air conditioners only last 4-5 years if we are lucky. So we got off lucky this time.
Now, today was different. We went to the Battery and Nancy took a lot of pictures. She has decided that the little camera is good for taking pictures of people, but not so hot for scenery (She needs to talk to T). We look and look for wild life and we don't see any. Nancy couldn't take as many pictures as usual because she couldn't walk far, but she went from bench to bench and Susie took me for a walk.
After the Battery, we went to Isle of Palms and looked around; then on to Poe's for dinner (Thanks, T).
If you made it this far, congratulations! We're hoping to see more of Charleston. All depends on Nancy's back. Thanks for stopping by.

We're Hoping to Get to Rainbow Row, tomorrow, but if not Nancy has lots of pictures from our other visits. |
One of many cannons in the Battery Park |
The trees in Charleston are beautiful. It's hard to believe that Hugo took enough of them to rebuild the city of Philadelphia, and still the city is so green. |
Here's one being painted/renovated. |
This cannon faces the bay--ready to defend. |
One of many statues in the park. There's one named after a man named Moultrie. I've been in the town named after him, as well. |
Hmmm...what to eat... |
Out the back door |
A Reminder Not to be Rowdy! |
We went over this bridge to get to Mt. Pleasant--think it's called Cooper Bridge. |
I snoozed when we were driving. When Nancy and Susie go in a restaurant where they don't allow me to go, Nancy leaves the truck running with the A/C on so I'm nice and comfy. |
We spent some time on the dock when we got back, but we didn't see any dolphins, tonight. |
Just some more pretty places in Charleston. |
If you made it this far, congratulations! We're hoping to see more of Charleston. All depends on Nancy's back. Thanks for stopping by.
