For those of you interested Only in TRAVEL, I (Jack) wrote the blog between MARCH 2010 and October 2010 during our travels west. We saw the most beautiful places and had the best time in our big truck and little trailer. See Blog Archive below.

Another Miracle for Jack

Jack hasn't been himself of late, his back legs have been getting weak. He still gets excited to go any place, but has trouble getting up into the truck and on his couch. I took him to the vet, yesterday. He has arthritis, which didn't surprise me because of his age. After one dose of Previcox 227 I could see an improvement, and today he's back to his nimble self. Thank goodness. I am so relieved. The rest of his blood work came out okay, too. I wanted to mention the medication in case any of you run into the same problem with your pups. It's a non-steroidal nsaid.

It's expensive stuff. I pay $7.00 for any medication I take. I paid $138.00 for 30 pills for him! He's worth every penny so I don't mind paying it; especially with the results, and I'm sure I can find it cheaper on the web. I've never bought medication for him online and wonder if it is the same quality. Anyone have an opinion?

I'm off to NY on Friday now that I know he can make the trip okay. I'm getting used to the higher dose of pain medication so I'm set to go, too! I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get drowsy. I'm not taking the trailer so I thought I'd pack a raincoat, hat, and sunglasses to see if I can sneak Jack into motels. I have no idea where I'm going to stop so I can't pick and choose pet friendly. I know Best Westerns generally are and Drury Inns. I'll wing it and do the best I can. I can always sleep at a Walmart in the truck if push comes to shove.

We thought Jack had a tick last week so Susan and I set about removing it. Wasn't hard to remove, but I was upset because I NEVER miss giving him his Frontline Plus. While at my son's this weekend, Jack was just not feeling well and really keeping to himself so I started to wonder if where the tick had been was becoming infected or whether we hadn't gotten the head. I had been putting Neosporin on it, but I decided to take another look and I felt something. "The head! It's still there! OMIGOSH! Okay, lay still, pal, I'll get it, lay still. Pull, pull, pull harder. Okay, almost done...Got it! Okay we're stopping at the vet tomorrow anyway and I'll have her take a look at it. Strange that it's bleeding so much. Thank goodness I had you vaccinated for Lyme Disease."

Vet: You did surgery on a skin tag.

Thanks, Mom!

  1. I laughed because it sounds like something I'd do. But you really do feel stupid though.

  3. You do know they make carts for older big dogs with bad legs. Just in case. But as long as the medication is working that is wonderful. I agree. I don't care how much the medicine is for the girls. Somehow I'll pay for it. They're both feeling great which makes me happy. Skitz threw up a couple of days but I think that was nerves about getting back on the road. Or probably because she has to wear a harness now. She hates it so much. Have a wonderful time you two.

  5. Kristine, I'm infamous for doing things like this. Thanks for stopping by.

Paul and Marsha, It wasn't a tick!

Sandie, you know I just saw someone demonstrating a cart the other night. I'll do without to pay for the medicine. I just felt bad that he didn't let me know that he was in pain until the weekend. So glad that your pups are doing well. They become such a big part of our lives. Is Skitz afraid of the seat belt harness? I wonder if a thunder jacket would make her feel more secure or maybe she'd rather be in a little crate. I can't wait to see my sister. It seems every time I planned to go, something would happen. I'm crossing my fingers. We just had the worst rainfall of the season. Couldn't even see the driveway. I was kind of glad that it passed through--maybe the coast will be clear when I leave Friday.

Carolyn, I hate ticks, too. The vet was relieved that it wasn't one mostly because she recommends the Frontline Plus.

Thanks all for stopping in and for commenting.

  6. Amazing that when you said that I was thinking oh I hope it isn't a skin tag. Well Jack seems to have weathered it and I am glad to hear he is feeling much better. I hope you two have a safe and fun trip.

    1. Too funny. I never gave it a thought while I was performing my surgery, Sherry. Imagine, Jack still trusts me to do anything to him. I hope so, too. I should be up and busy and not on the computer! Thanks for writing.

  7. Our German Shepard mix also was slowing disband we were told to try Metacam, also a non-steroid drug. Worked immediately! ! Price was $128. Someone suggested Costco so I took the Rx there and it only cost $75. BTW, I also take the same metacam for humans and know how great it works. -- CoolJudy

    1. I've written that down, Judy, and will ask my vet about it. She actually provided the tablets. Isn't it wonderful to see our pooches pop right back up? Made my heart feel so good. I will look into metacam for myself--Lord knows I need everything I can get. Thanks for stopping by. I was just talking about you the other day. Anyone who knows me knows I have no sense of direction so I was telling a friend about how you planned my whole itinerary for California in 2010. You have no idea how much you helped me and how grateful I was/am. :)

  8. Glad to hear you're doing better, and Jack, too. Now he will get over your minor surgery, and be just fine. I won't tell you about the time I gave the cat a haircut. The vet said "that happens now and then", when I took to cat in.

  9. Ah, our four footed friend certainly add amusement to our lives, don't the, Russ. Loved your blog about "sharing your ice cream" with Poppy. Lizzie used to like a lick of my ice cream cones--she'd lick and then lick my shoulder after every lick--like she was saying thank you. She was a wonderful dog.

  10. Good to hear Jack is feeling so much better. I probably would have done the same thing to think it was the head.

Fred wants Jack to know he's happy Jack is feeling better and hopes he has a better trip. Fred was not a Happy Camper, hated the dirt and bugs.
Be safe and enjoy your travels.

    1. Hey, Jo. I'm on my way to NY--too exhausted to do a blog. Once again I remind people who have RVs, tents, whatever. The only room I could get is in a bad part of town and a smoking room because I have Jack with me. How I miss my trailer.

Tell Fred Jack says thank you. He did well on the trip, but I stopped to let him stretch a number of times. I'm with Fred. I hate bugs.
